New York Governor Andrew Cuomo resigns from office. Several women accuse him of sexual harassment.

Andrew Cuomo (63) is stepping down. The governor of New York announced on Tuesday (August 10th). Several women had accused the 63-year-old of sexual harassment, and he still rejects the allegations to this day. “I think the best way to help, given the circumstances, is to step aside,” said Cuomo in a speech broadcast live. In 14 days, Deputy Governor Kathy Hochul (62) will take over Cuomo’s office and become the first female governor of New York.

Investigation initiated

An independent investigation came to the conclusion that the governor, who has been in office since 2011, is said to have sexually molested several women, attorney general Letitia James (62) announced on August 3. According to the investigation, there were, among other things, “undesirable and non-consensual touching” as well as numerous allusions of a sexual nature, “which are said to have created a hostile work environment for women”. She spoke of a “climate of fear”.

179 people were spoken to for the report. More than 74,000 pieces of evidence, including emails, text messages, and pictures, were evaluated. This evidence painted a “deeply disturbing but clear picture,” said the attorney general. According to James, Cuomo groped, kissed, hugged and made sexual innuendos to women. James thanked both the women for their courage and the independent investigators for their professionalism. Cuomo had subsequently resisted resigning from office. US President Joe Biden (78) is said to have asked for his resignation.
