Autonomy is still and always the sinews of war for smartphones. Fast charging and chip optimization can partially compensate for the weak point of our mobile devices, but it remains difficult to use a smartphone for more than one or two days without a power outlet or external battery.

Android 14 Beta 3 adds a new way to optimize smartphone battery life based on work done with dark mode and displays always-on. The next version of Android is not expected before the end of the summer. Successive beta phases allow Google to test new functions.

Less brightness, more autonomy

Google’s idea is very simple: play on the brightness and the display to consume less energy on the screen. With the option enabled, the smartphone will darken your wallpaper and the icon set used. It will be particularly effective with an Oled screen. Fortunately, this is the case for the majority of good smartphones today.

Since Oled screens consume less energy by displaying dark shades, this mode should very logically make it possible to extend the autonomy of our smartphones.

A welcome addition that recalls certain options that Google already offers with its Pixel range. This time, the novelty concerns Android and will therefore be offered on the vast majority of our devices.
