Angela Merkel (66) has traveled to the USA. In Washington, DC, she was received by US President Joe Biden, 78, presumably for the last time as Chancellor in the White House on the afternoon of July 15 (local time). Biden had previously announced that he was looking forward to Merkel’s visit.

During the meeting, Biden stated that he saw Merkel as a personal friend as well as a friend of the United States. The Chancellor had previously also met Vice President Kamala Harris (56). This later explainedthat she had a “far-reaching discussion” with Merkel and that she intends to further deepen the partnership between the two countries together with Biden and the Chancellor.

Awarded an honorary doctorate

During her stay in the USA, Merkel was also awarded an honorary doctorate from Johns Hopkins University on Thursday. “No two regions in the world are linked by such a depth and breadth of common interests and values ​​as Europe and North America,” said the Chancellor in a speech on the occasion of the award. That is why she understands “the great honor you have given me today, not least as a special expression of the bond between our two countries”.
