Animals dehydrated – 190 bats rescued from Vienna high-rise buildings

Unusual animal rescue operation in the Vienna district of Favoriten: 190 bats were “caught” in their hibernation area and were rescued. Now they are being nursed up in the Vösendorf Animal Welfare House in Lower Austria.

You don’t see that every day. Helpers from several organizations in a skyscraper on Wienerberg on Wednesday night felt reminded of Batman’s film companion. 190 bats were saved. The “big noctule swifts”, which originally came to Austria from Russia to winter, were no longer able to get out of their self-chosen sleeping place on their own. Therefore, the dehydrated and starving flutterers had to be rescued quickly. Unfortunately, some of them were already dead. The further care of the 190 new protégés has now been taken over by the animal shelter in Vösendorf on the city limits, where they are now looked after and fed around the clock by employees. Due to the complex procedure, four keepers can feed 71 bats in five hours. On the one hand, this requires insects, which are removed by hand for the many hungry little mouths. On the other hand, special refrigerators have to be set up so that the “great noctule swifts” can hibernate in peace. If the fluttering animals don’t sleep now, the egg cell will continue to develop and the young would be born. In order to prevent this, the winter rest is so important. In addition to the time-consuming and personnel-intensive all-round care, the refrigerators required for the bats cause at least around 3,000 euros in costs that were simply not budgeted for in the annual budget. Due to the unusual and current “bat emergency situation” in Vienna, the Vösendorf Animal Welfare House is asking animal-loving citizens for financial help.
