Emergency forces found the victim on Monday in the ruins in Surfside near Miami, said district mayor Daniella Levine Cava in the evening (local time). She had only announced the discovery of three more bodies that morning. The official number is now 28 deaths.
The emergency services also made thunderstorms to create in the search for survivors, because the tropical storm “Elsa” is approaching Florida, said Levine Cava. Meteorologists assume, however, that the storm itself should spare the region. However, lightning would have temporarily interrupted the search. For Miami there were thunderstorm warnings in the evening.
Any delay frustrates the rescuers the most, said the mayor. “You live to save life.” It is good, however, that after the targeted demolition of the ruined building late on Sunday evening, the emergency services could now search for victims in areas that were previously inaccessible.
The residential complex with around 130 units collapsed on June 24 for reasons that were still unclear. Since then, detection dogs, special cameras and heavy equipment have been used to search for victims practically around the clock. Another 117 people are still missing. However, it is unclear how many of them were actually in the building near the beach at the time of the accident.
