The latest security update for Windows Defender is causing a bug.
Some users have, in fact, been able to see shortcuts disappear, and this, without the slightest reason.
A bug for Windows Defender…
For the past few years, Microsoft has been offering its in-house solution, integrated into Windows: Defender, to all those who do not wish to install a third-party antivirus on their machine (such as Avast, AVG, Kapersky, etc.). Without being infallible, it is a security tool that is generally sufficient to protect most Internet users, and which benefits from regular monitoring by Microsoft (in addition to being completely free).
However, the American giant has just confirmed that the latest security update for Defender comes with a relatively annoying bug. A concern that affects all supported versions of Windows, whether you are an avid fan of good old Windows 10 or whether you have migrated to the latest Windows 11.
… but a patch already being deployed!
Indeed, once the security update 1.381.2140.0 is installed, Microsoft indicates that ” application shortcuts in the Start menu, pinned to the taskbar, and on the desktop may be missing or deleted. As a result, errors may be observed when trying to run (.exe) files that have dependencies with shortcut files.
The good news is that Microsoft has already deployed a patch to remove this astonishing malfunction. The users concerned therefore simply have to apply the latter, while the others will be able to take advantage of a security update 1.381.2164.0 which is already free of bugs.
Beware though, Microsoft has confirmed that installing the patch will not restore shortcuts that may have been previously deleted. It will therefore be up to the user to restore them manually.
