Apple and Google’s mobile browsers in London’s sights


Are Google and Apple exerting too much of a duopoly on mobile web browsers? The question is asked by the Competition and Markets Authority in the United Kingdom. The regulator has just launched an investigation, Tuesday, November 22, on the supposed dominance of the two American multinationals.

A “stranglehold” on the mobile ecosystem

The announcement of this procedure follows the results of a study by the Competition and Markets Authority launched on the subject last year. Early data suggested that Apple and Google had the “stranglehold” on operating systems, application stores or mobile web browsers, reports the BBC. In June, the regulator had already announced that an in-depth investigation into the subject would be carried out.

Apple and Google mobile browsers were used in 97% of cases in 2021 to access a website from a mobile. The Autorité thus feared that this absolute dominance of American players would limit the possibilities of consumers. “Many UK businesses and web developers tell us they feel held back by restrictions set by Apple and Google”says today Sarah Cardell, acting director general of the CMA in a press release.

In addition, the investigation will also have to look into the question of the applications of cloud gaming within the App Store. These are prohibited on the Apple store. Long of 18 months, the procedure should make it possible to clearly identify the role of Google and Apple in this file. If necessary, measures could be taken to“to improve competition and innovation in these sectors”.

Apple and Google defend themselves

The two companies in question did not fail to react quickly to the announcement of the Competition and Markets Authority. Google ensures that its browser poses no problem for developers who can download another from its store, one of the most complete on the market. “We are committed to building open platforms that empower consumers and help developers build successful businesses”reacted a spokesperson for the firm.

Apple, for its part, ensures that it is committed to “constructive” with the regulator and will explain, once again, how its approach to technology “promotes competition and choice, while ensuring consumer privacy and security”.
