Apple iOS: Set up and limit screen time for your children

INSTRUCTIONS

Special parental controls can be set up on Apple iOS devices such as the iPhone or iPad. We’ll show you how you can limit your children’s screen time.

Apple’s iOS operating system comes with its own parental controls. Whether on the iPhone or the iPad, you can use the security tool to define restrictions that protect your children from dangerous content. Together with family sharing, you can configure Apple’s devices perfectly for children.

For example, you can prevent access to harmful and offensive content on websites or within apps. You can also specifically ban in-app purchases or order a compulsory break from your cell phone.

In this tutorial we will show you how to specifically activate and personalize restrictions on your iPhone or iPad. In addition, you can optionally completely deactivate access to various functions or apps. Since we describe many functions in these instructions, we have broken them down for you again:

  1. Limit cell phone use in general

  2. Set app limits

  3. Exclude certain apps from restrictions

  4. Define data protection and change options

  5. Turn off in-app purchases

  6. Turn off system apps

  7. Filter age ratings and offensive content

  8. Set communication limit

Limit cell phone use in general

You don’t want your child to use their cell phone or tablet late at night? With iOS version 12 or higher, you can use the “Time out” option to limit usage by defining a time window in which only permitted apps such as “Phone” or “Messages” work.

Configure time out

  1. time out 1
    1

First go to Settings and navigate to “Screen Time”.

  2. 2

Now tap on “Time out” – Here you can now activate the function and define a time window.

Set app limits

You can also set specific limits for individual apps. You can choose different categories such as “Games”, “Social Networks” or “Education” and restrict usage in general.

Exclude certain apps from restrictions

You can always allow certain applications, even if the usage period has expired. Here you can select any app, for example “Apple Maps” or “Messages”.

That’s how it’s done

  1. 1

Open Settings and tap “Screen Time”. Then navigate to “Always allow…”.

  2. Always2 Always2
    2

Now you can see the applications above that can always be used. With the exception of the telephone function, you can remove existing apps using the red minus sign in front of them. Further down on the page you will find all installed programs and can add them to the top list using the green plus symbol.

Define data protection and change options

You can configure many other things in the “Restrictions” category. In the “Data protection” category you can switch off the location function or access to the microphone. You can also specify whether your children are allowed to change the lock code or account information.

That’s how it works

  1. 1

Go to Settings on your device and select “Screen Time”. Then open “Restrictions”. Now you first have to activate the restrictions.

  2. 2

You will already find many setting options on this page. Under data protection you can, for example, prohibit the location function, access to the microphone or even photos. . A little further down you can set a maximum volume or decide whether you want to allow changes to the code or account.

Turn off in-app purchases

You don’t want your children to have the opportunity to make in-app purchases, for example in games. Then simply switch it off. You can also determine whether apps can be installed or deleted at all.

Ban in-app purchases: Here’s how

  1. 1

Under “Restrictions,” select “iTunes & App Store Purchases.” Here you can now specify whether you want to allow in-app purchases and the deletion or installation of apps.

Turn off system apps

In the “Restrictions” you can also switch off the system’s own programs. These include the camera app as well as Safari, Mail or Siri.

Prevent access to system applications

  1. 1

Opens “Allowed apps” in the restrictions and use the slider to the right of the applications to determine which programs you allow and which you don’t.

Filter age ratings and offensive content

The content restrictions on iOS are powerful. Here you can set age ratings, filter offensive content and much more.

Set content restrictions

  1. 1

Go to “Content Restrictions” in “Restrictions”. Here you have lots of setting options and can define age ratings for music, podcasts or films or restrict web content.

Set communication limit

Within the screen time, you can also specify which contacts are allowed to communicate with. Below we will explain how you can configure this.
