Apple is quietly progressing on virtual reality: the name “realityOS” appears in code

The term “realityOS” was discovered in code from Apple. This would be the name used by the firm for the operating system responsible for animating its future products in virtual or augmented reality. And this is the first time it appears in this form.

Virtual reality is slowly becoming a very tangible reality at Apple. Spotted by several separate sources, the term “realityOS” now appears both in open source code deposited on GitHub and on App Store transfer logs. As reminded engagement, this is not the first time we hear about this OS. He had already been seen under the diminutive of “rOS” by Mark Gurman, journalist for Bloomberg. We were then in 2017.

realityOS would refer anyway to the operating system that Apple would adopt to animate its future virtual or augmented reality products. Its “lowercase/uppercase” nomenclature is also reminiscent of the names of other Apple OSes: iOS, macOS watchOS, tvOS… used by the brand for years. Internally, this new system dedicated to VR and AR would however be designated by the code name “ Oak“.

realityOS, the name of a future OS dedicated to AR / VR at Apple?

Still, the appearance of the term “realityOS” is not necessarily to be taken literally. As developer Steve Troughton-Smith pointed out, this mention could ” to be only the vestige of a sweater request made by someone with a fake account “. In other words, let’s be careful…

(Though this could just be a remnant of somebody’s pull request from a fake account. Grain of salt, etc)

As a reminder, Apple has been working for several years now on the development of AR / VR devices. The firm would have started to take a very close interest in it in 2017 after the acquisition of VRvana, a company specializing in augmented reality. In 2019, the media The Information indicated that a mixed reality headset would arrive at Apple in 2022, followed in 2023 by AR glasses (the famous Apple Glass).

More recently,Bloombergreconsidered this estimate, specifying that these projects would have finally been postponed to 2023 following development problems (overheating, in particular). At the end of last year, we learned that Apple would like to give its headphones computing power equivalent to that of a Mac with an M1 processor. The firm would also aim to make it autonomous, able to operate without being connected to another device.

During a conference call with several analysts, Tim Cook gave his opinion on the metaverse segment, a concept currently being explored by Meta and Microsoft. The Apple boss has reaffirmed the firm’s interest in…
