With the future macOS Ventura, i.e. macOS 13, the Mac will receive a comprehensive makeover. However, not all users will benefit from this, because Apple is selective. Many previously supported Macs will no longer be included.
macOS Ventura: Apple’s strict compatibility list
A new name and many new features and improvements. The first look at macOS Ventura makes you want more. But what Apple didn’t mention directly at the WWDC keynote is now becoming a sad certainty. Some Macs have to do without and remain with macOS Monterey (source: Apple). The following models are basically compatible with macOS 13, i.e. Ventura:
- iMac 2017 and newer
- Mac Pro 2019 and newer
- iMac Pro 2017
- Mac mini 2018 and newer
- MacBook Air 2018 and newer
- MacBook 2017
- MacBook Pro 2017 and newer
If you still have older hardware, you unfortunately have to practice doing without it. Regrettable, because macOS Monterey was even more frugal, still ran on older computers such as all iMacs from the end of 2015, MacBook Air and Pro could also be from 2015. With the Mac mini, the system accepts the models from the end of 2014 and the well-known Mac Pro in the black tube from 2013 also worked, but is now being abandoned.

Apple’s Intel computers no longer have a great future
On the one hand regrettable, on the other hand understandable, because Apple will increasingly focus on Macs with its own chips in the future. Macs with Intel processors are then increasingly sidelined. For example, the new automatic dictation function of macOS Ventura is only supported on Macs with an M1 chip and newer, so the feature does not run on Intel computers.
Currently, paying developers on macOS 13 get Ventura first, the free beta will follow in July and then in autumn the release of the finished version. So if you still have an older computer that is no longer supported and would like to have the new features, there is no way around a hardware upgrade.
