If he ranks easily among the best laptops
of the market in terms of performance, display or even ergonomics, the MacBook Pro 2021
is dead last on speeds… and this, despite its support for the WiFi 6
.

This is what we learn from a video test published this 1er February by YouTuber Jarrod’sTech. In a ranking produced by him, the person concerned contrasts the Wi-Fi 6 speeds of the new MacBook Pro 16, under M1 Pro processor (16 GB of unified memory / 512 GB of SSD), with those measured on about twenty other Laptops previously tested on its channel.

The poor performance of the MacBook Pro 16 in connectivity

If the Gigabyte Aero 17 YD, Lenovo Legion 5 Pro and Alienware m15 R6 arrive in the top 3 of the ranking, with values ranging from 1,644 to 1,561 Mbps, thanks to their Intel Wi-Fi 6 AX200 and Killer Wi-Fi modems 6 AX1650i (all clocked at 160 MHz), the MacBook Pro 16 ranks for its part in the very last position – with only 758 Mbps on the clock.

The performance of Apple’s latest flagship in Wi-Fi connectivity is therefore disappointing to say the least. They even come behind those offered by much less expensive devices, equipped with MediaTek or Realtek modems.

Is Apple limiting the performance of its Wi-Fi voluntarily?

Jarrod’sTech was unable to determine the supplier of the Wi-Fi 6 modem used on the MacBook Pro 16… It is therefore difficult to know whether the latter’s technical specifications are in question. WCCFTech for its part, hypothesizes that Apple would have knowingly restricted the wireless performance of its Mac to reduce its impact on the battery and thus extend the autonomy. A track that makes sense.

Note also that if they are quite bad compared to the competition, the speeds observed on the MacBook Pro 16 are not disabling in the context of classic and daily use. However, the device is intended for advanced users who could benefit from superior connectivity in certain very specific and very demanding contexts of use.
