  • The Apple Watch should also be able to measure blood sugar in the future.
  • This should be done without piercing with a laser.
  • The health function has now reached the proof of concept stage.

There have always been rumors about measuring blood sugar with the Apple Watch in the past. However, Apple has so far failed in the realization and implementation. That could change soon, however, because according to a Bloomberg report by Mark Gurman, the manufacturer has now reached the proof of concept stage. The feasibility of the implementation was thus proven.

Integrating the meter into the Apple Watch would be a boon for diabetics because it would mean diabetics no longer have to prick their skin to check glucose levels.

Instead, the manufacturer is said to use a silicon photonic chip that uses a laser to shine light under the skin to determine the glucose concentration in the body. The proof of concept stage shows that this technology works, however, according to Gurman, the necessary hardware must now be reduced in size so that it fits in the smartwatch.

A prototype is currently said to be the size of an iPhone and attached to the biceps. So the publication in a watch will probably not happen any time soon. Gurman expects several years of development to get there.

Apple itself does not comment on possible developments. The manufacturer is said to be working with hundreds of engineers on the secret project and have already invested hundreds of millions of euros in the development.
