Apple is finally working on a real repair mode which will make your task much easier when you need to have your iPhone repaired. This should take its first steps in iOS 17.5, the deployment of which is planned in a few days.

Historically, sending an iPhone to Apple for repair requires first deactivating the “Find my iPhone” functionality, and therefore the “Activation Lock” option. However, you probably know that these features are essential for the security of your device, since they allow its location in the event of loss or theft and prevent its use with another Apple ID. This process therefore posed a real headache for users who were forced to deactivate these protections before having to entrust their device.

iOS 17.5: finally a real repair mode for your iPhone

The beta version of iOS 17.5 reveals a new repair mode. This feature will allow you to take your iPhone to technical support without having to deactivate the “Find My iPhone” function and Activation Lock.

Concretely, by accessing the Locate application, you can select the device concerned and choose the “Delete this device” option. Once this operation is carried out, your iPhone will automatically enter repair mode, as was discovered by our colleagues at MacRumors in the latest beta version of the operating system.

Rest assured now: your iPhone will remain fully operational throughout the repair process. Therefore, repair mode will not alter the functionality of your device in any way. In addition to being perfectly usable, it will be locatable via the Find My iPhone application.

A feature reserved for the iPhone (for now)

So as not to do things halfway, an informative message will appear on your device, indicating that your phone is ready for repair. A stethoscope will appear next to your iPhone’s name in the list of devices associated with your Apple ID. You will even have the option to report it as lost if it ever disappears during the repair process.

For the moment, however, this functionality seems limited to iPhones. Selecting the “Remove this device” option from an iPad, Mac, or Apple Watch will likely unlink your device from your Apple account.

Last year, lines of code unearthed in Android 14 already mentioned a repair mode coming to Google’s OS. To put it simply, this aims to allow users to send their smartphone for repair without needing to reset it to hide their data.

As a reminder, the next iOS update, scheduled to launch this May, will also allow users to download applications outside of the App Store. A feature eagerly awaited by fans of the Cupertino brand, which will certainly contribute to further decompartmentalizing Apple’s historically closed ecosystem.

Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max

  • Lighter, more stylish
  • Hyper bright screen
  • Good autonomy

The iPhone 15 Pro Max is undoubtedly the most interesting model of the 2023 vintage. Despite its gigantism, it is much lighter than its predecessor, and stands out as the very first to benefit from a periscopic telephoto lens providing zoom 5x. Never before seen on iPhone.

If this thing will hardly impress those who use high-end Android smartphones, in our opinion Apple is largely catching up thanks to excellent quality optics, which remain very capable in low light.

Backed by the A17 Pro chip which shows the muscles in play as well as in more basic processing tasks, the iPhone 15 Pro Max is also the one which offers the best autonomy of the Pro models. Yes, despite everything, its striking power still keeps it a notch below the iPhone 15 Plus in terms of endurance.

Let’s add to the balance sheet the welcome contributions of the new action button, which offers a whole new way to quickly access essential functions of the iPhone.

In a nutshell: the best iPhone ever designed by Apple.
