The entire front made of glass, without any interruptions – Apple repeatedly spoke about such an iPhone vision. And the Cupertino company has done a lot in recent years to make this dream come true, even if it is making smaller but very important steps with the iPhone 16.
First, the home button disappeared from the front. The iPhone SE currently has one, but a successor with Face ID is already in the starting blocks. The current iPhone 15 Pro, like its predecessors, has a so-called dynamic island, a variable notch. One could almost believe that Apple is acting according to the motto: If ugly, then at least functionally ugly.
Insiders and analysts like the well-known “Apple guru” Ming-Chi Kuo expect that the Dynamic Island is only a stopover and that sooner or later Apple will present an iPhone that only has a display on the front.
According to a report by the Korean publication The Elec, LG Innotek has now started developing so-called UDC (Under Display Cameras) for upcoming iPhone models. The cameras are designed in such a way that they are invisible when inactive and, unlike well-known front cameras, do not require a cutout, a “punch hole” or a notch.
These are usually necessary to allow light to pass through to the sensor. Otherwise there would be falsifications and distortions. According to the report, LG Innotek will address this problem with a multiple lens system that can compensate for optical anomalies. The company holds numerous patents in this regard.
According to The Elec, other suppliers have submitted similar components to Apple for testing in the past, but these did not meet the quality standards required by Apple.
Will it be used in the iPhone 16 as early as 2024?
Apple is expected to introduce the iPhone 16 generation in autumn 2024. It is unclear whether the technology will be ready for the market by then, but it is unlikely. According to the US magazine MacRumors, display analyst Ross Young assumes that Apple will first use the new UDC in the iPhone 17 Pro, which will be released in 2025.
