Applying eyeshadow is not rocket science. If you know a few basic rules, it’s quick and easy. We’ll tell you how it works and have a few extra tricks for you.
For a perfect look you only have to apply a little eyeshadow in addition to mascara. Unfortunately, many forego this great make-up product entirely because they are not sure how to use it properly. And yes, if you put eyeshadow in the wrong place, eyes can quickly look smaller or eye shapes look unattractive. That’s why we have great step-by-step instructions for you so that nothing can go wrong when applying eyeshadow.
Applying eyeshadow: how to do it right
You only need a few things for perfect eyeshadow eyes. You might even already have them at home so you can get started right away.
That’s how it works:
- The base: Before you apply the eyeshadow, you should have a so-called Use the eyeshadow base. This ensures that the eye shadow can be evenly distributed and stays where it should be for a long time. Apply the eyeshadow base from the upper lash line to the brow, i.e. on the immobile and movable lid. Then you can lightly powder the whole thing to fix it even better.
- The color: So that the eyeshadow looks right and the eye has more depth, you should go with it two different eyeshadow tones work – a lighter one and a darker one. First, you should apply the lighter eyeshadow to the entire movable eyelid, from the upper lash line up to the crease. You now apply the dark tone from the outer corner of the eye up to the crease of the eyelid. Make sure that you blend the eyeshadow well or blur it a little so that there are no hard edges and transitions. If you like, you can also accentuate the upper and lower lash line with the dark eyeshadow. This makes the eyelashes look a little thicker and the make-up more dramatic.
- Set accents: With the lighter shade of eyeshadow or one another bright eyeshadow (there are also highlighters) you can now set additional accents that can have an enormous effect. Your gaze opens up and you appear even friendlier when you apply the light shade to the inner corner of your eye. You can also create a great effect for emphasizing your eye area by applying the light shade above the movable eyelid below the brow.
- Blend: At the end you should check again: Are the transitions from light to dark soft and well blended with one another or are there hard, unnatural edges? Maybe again correct with fingers or a brush and the eyeshadow look is done!

What is the best way to apply eyeshadow?
There are several ways to apply eyeshadow. It is a matter of taste which one you choose. Here are the pros and cons of each technique:
With your fingers: Many feel that they can work better and more safely with their fingers than with a brush or applicator. Larger areas in particular, such as the eyelids, can be worked on quickly and easily with the fingers. It becomes more difficult, however, if you want to apply make-up in more detail, for example if you want to emphasize the lash line. It certainly makes more sense to choose an applicator.
With the brush: An eyeshadow brush comes in handy. With a good copy it is possible to cover larger areas with eye shadow as well as to master more delicate work such as the lash line or crease. Brushes that are slightly beveled so that you can master various challenges with them are practical here.
With the applicator: Eyeshadow applicators are small, often pointed sponges on a handle. With them, the eyeshadow can be applied particularly precisely and finely. It is particularly worthwhile to have such an applicator on hand for applying the darker nuances.
Applying eyeshadow: which color is best for me?
Here you can actually say: What is correct is what you like! However, there is the possibility of making your own eye color shine with the right choice of color. And who wouldn’t want that ?! In order for this to work, one should follow a crucial basic rule:
“If possible, choose a complementary color to your eye color as the eyeshadow color.”
Why is that? Quite simply: Complementary colors are the colors that are opposite each other in the color wheel – that is, they are opposite. In the case of colors, this means that they contrast with one another. In detail it looks like this:
Green eyes
The best way to make green eyes stand out is to use them with Shades of red emphasizes. Red is the complementary color of green. However, since red looks quite extreme, it is also possible to use tones such as Purple and pink to fall back on. This as well brownish nuances make green eyes shine.
Blue eyes
The complementary color of blue is yellow. A yellow eye shadow might be an option for evening make-up, but it is probably less suitable for everyday use. Brown eyes
With brown eyes you have the jackpot, so to speak. You can then choose your eyeshadow from a particularly large color palette. Plum and berry tones look just as good with brown eyes as Gold nuances. Blue and greenish eyeshadow nuances also look great. On the other hand, you should be careful with yellowish or reddish tones. These can quickly make you look sallow.
