Two French mountaineers who had undertaken the ascent of the highest volcano in the world, Ojos del Salado, in the Andes, sent a satellite distress signal which triggered the departure on the spot of a team of Argentinian rescuers of high- Mountain. A third Frenchman, who had to turn around a little earlier for altitude acclimatization problems, was found “in good health”, according to local police.
The emergency services established a base camp at an altitude of 5500 m on Sunday evening, December 26, before resuming the search in the early hours of Monday. Operations are complicated by “difficult climatic conditions, with heavy rains and hailstorms in the high mountains”, according to the police of the province of Catamarca.
