“We haven’t told you the whole story. What happens when you deviate from the ‘Yellow Brick Road’? Here’s the first look at #WickedMovie… Currently in production in Oz .”

A hit musical

Created in 2003 by Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman (who wrote the feature film), the musical was inspired by Gregory Maguire’s novel, “Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West“, a rereading of the famous book “The Wizard of Oz “by L. Frank Baum.

The show is a real success and has been sold out for 20 years. It grossed $1 billion on Broadway alone and nearly 5 billion dollars worldwide where it was seen by 65 million people. Wicked is one of Broadway’s longest-running musicals behind The Phantom of the Opera (1988), Chicago (1996) and The Lion King (1997). Suffice to say that Universal expects a lot from this adaptation on the big screen.

In project for 12 years, the film adaptation of this success is directed by Jon M. Chu, director of Sexy Dance 2 and 3, Insaisissables 2 or Where we come from. Prior to that, the project swirled around the hands of Ryan Murphy, James Mangold, Rob Marshall, and even JJ Abrams.

Wicked recounts what happened in the World of Oz long before Dorothy arrived. At first rivals, the green and intelligent Elphaba befriends the blonde and bubbly Glinda. But the world decides that these two witches must face each other. The musical tells the story of the Wizard of Oz from a different perspective.

Also worn by Jonathan Bailey (Bridgerton), Michelle Yeoh and Jeff Goldblum, Wicked will be released in 2 parts. The first will be visible from December 4, 2024 while the second will be in theaters a year later, on December 24, 2025.

As a reminder, in 2013, Sam Raimi had directed his adaptation of the novel by L. Frank Baum, The Fantastic World of Oz with Michelle Williams and Mila Kunis.
