Asterix and Obelix Mission Cleopatra: 20 years ago, the offbeat promotion of Chabat and Darmon at Ardisson

While the comedy “Asterix and Obelix Mission Cleopatra” celebrates the twentieth anniversary of its release today, a look back at the offbeat promo by Alain Chabat and Gérard Darmon on the set of Thierry Ardisson, January 26, 2002.

It’s quite incredible to write, but the cult comedy Asterix and Obelix Mission Cleopatra celebrates today… its 20th anniversary! To pass this big blow of old age with a smile, we invite you to come back to the passage of Alain Chabat and Gérard Darmon at Everybody talks about it, Thierry Ardisson’s show, to promote the film. It was January 26, 2002.

In the flagship cathodic show of the 90s and 2000s, Chabat (director of the film and Julius Caesar on screen) and Darmon (the villainous Amonbofis), hailed by a “Roman triumph” of circumstance, are perfectly at ease with the offbeat tone of the France 2 talk show. Shooting anecdotes, influences…: the duo sells the film in an infectious good mood, all under the sluice gates of “sniper” Laurent Baffie.

Four days after Chabat and Darmon’s passage on the Ardisson plateau, Asterix and Obelix Mission Cleopatra, led by its five-star cast, is released in French cinemas. The public success is overwhelming, the comedy bringing together more than 14.5 million spectators and quickly acquiring a cult status that has never been denied over the course of two decades.
