Asterix by Alain Chabat and Netflix: finally a date for the series Le Combat des Chefs!

It will still take a little patience for die-hard Asterix and Obelix fans: Alain Chabat’s animated series for Netflix has revealed its broadcast slot… and it won’t be for 2024.

By Toutatis ! Netflix joins Asterix, Obelix, Dogmatix and the big family of irreducible Gauls born from the imagination of Goscinny & Uderzo. And it is under the supervision of Alain Chabat that an animated series is currently being produced, in the premises from the Toulouse studio TATalready at work on Jungle Aces 1 and 2, Terra Willy, Pil ou Pattie and the Wrath of Poseidon.

Abraracourcix / Aplusbegalix, round 1!

Announced in 2021, the project will release the album The Battle of the Chefs, with Alain Chabat directing and writing the screenplay. Published in 1966, the seventh album of the adventures of Asterix & Obelix sees the druid Panoramix “diminished” after having received a menhir on the head. Without a magic potion, the leader of the Gauls Abraracourcix must then take up the challenge launched by a rival, Aplusbégalix: a confrontation at the top during a “fight of the leaders”, which will see the irreducible village come under Roman control in the event of defeat. …

Let us point out that this incident (the chance encounter between a menhir of Obélix and Panoramix) had already been partly transposed to the screen in the feature film Astérix et le coup du menhir in 1989, but also in the 4D attraction Attention Menhir“Armorican blockbuster” broadcast exclusively at Parc Astérix.

Asterix on Netflix? Still a little patience…

Initially expected in 2024, the series Le Combat des chefs, told in 5 30-minute episodes, should now be broadcast on Netflix in the first half of 2025according to a press release from Editions Albert René (who own and manage all the rights to the adventures of Asterix) relayed by our colleagues from 20 minutes. In particular, we should come across “new characters” born from the imagination of Alain Chabat.

A film, a release, an album and an announcement

Remember that in 2023 the filmmaker celebrated the 21 and a half (!) anniversary of Asterix and Obelix: Mission Cleopatra, with a theatrical release enhanced by a few surprises (and seen by 409,089 spectators this summer). This event was part of a prosperous year for the Gallic license, with the 4,622,711 admissions of Asterix & Obélix: the Middle Kingdom by Guillaume Canet, the announcement of a new animated film for cinemas (but without Alexandre Astier), and the publication of The White Iris40th album in the scripted series entrusted to the pen of Fabcaro and the pencil of Didier Conrad.
