At 75, Joan MacDonald has 1.6 million followers on Instagram. His speciality ? Fitness!

There is no age to become an Instagram star! And that, Joan MacDonald knows something! At 75, this septuagenarian from Ontario, Canada, is at the head of a community of 1.6 million subscribers on Instagram. His speciality ? Fitness! Through her posts and videos, she shares various muscle-building exercises, dietary advice and other cardio exercises on a daily basis.

It was in 2017, just five years ago, that Joan’s fitness adventure began. In poor physical shape, suffering from arthritis and high blood pressure, the septuagenarian decided to take her life into her own hands. “When Michelle (his daughter, professional sports coach, editor’s note) gave me an ultimatum, I thought it was now or never, Joan recently told ABC News. I was sick and tired of being sick. I existed, I did not live. Determined, Joan left for Tulum, Mexico, to follow her first training sessions with her daughter. She also completely overhauled her diet. “It was difficult at first, says Michelle MacDonald. People don’t realize that she was out there on the pitch trying to figure it all out with all the frustration that entailed.”

She lost 30 pounds in 5 years

Despite the difficulties, Joan pushed her limits and lost almost 30 kg. Much healthier than she was then, she was able to shelve the medications she was taking for high blood pressure, cholesterol and gastric reflux. Even better, thanks to her daughter, who encouraged her to share her journey on social networks, she found a real passion: “I go to the gym five days a week. I like this rhythm, I always can’t wait to go.” Nevertheless, Joan underlines it: this life is not easy every day: “Nothing is magic. It’s a lot of work, but work that can be enjoyed. In the end, you’ll be stronger and healthier, and that’s all that matters.“, she concludes.
