At the cinema: Godzilla x Kong The New Kingdom… Everything you need to know about the return of legendary creatures!

3 years after facing each other, Godzilla and Kong team up in the new film from the MonsterVerse saga launched in 2014. And here is what you need to know about this feature film expected in theaters this week.

What does it talk about ?

The all-powerful Kong and the fearsome Godzilla join forces against a terrible, still-secret threat that risks annihilating them and endangering the very survival of the human species.

“The New Kingdom” goes back to the origins of the two titans and the mysteries of Skull Island, while revealing the mythical battle that helped shape these two extraordinary creatures and linked their fate to that of man forever…

We take the same…

…and we continue! In 2021, while many theaters were still closed due to the pandemic, Godzilla and King Kong came to blows on the screens (small, VOD and SVOD required) and then joined forces against another enemy. At the end of a feature film that we have also summarized very well for you.

Three years later, here they are again. At the movie theater. So, not to multiply as the title Godzilla x Kong might suggest, but to continue to team up. In order to “Win together or die alone”as the posters say with a tagline that the French Football Team and its “We live together, we die together” of the 2006 World Cup.

But where, how, with whom?

Journey to the center of the earth (hollow)

Interviewed in the previous opus (then in season 1 of the Monarch series, which serves to link some of the films together but does not need to be seen to understand this one), the Hollow Earth is the setting here main part of the adventure.

A lush central core, which connects several points on the globe together, obeys its own rules (particularly in terms of gravity), in which Kong has lived since the end of the previous opus (and the destruction of his island of Skull Island) and some of the many mysteries that remain to be elucidated will be revealed here. For better and for worse.

Skary movie

If Godzilla x Kong takes its time to introduce it, the promotion had already revealed THE real big villain of the story. The one who will bring together the two legendary monsters in front of him: Skar King.

Warner Bros. Pictures

Skar King

A giant and merciless orangutan, whose mythology has been somewhat revised here, but which presents itself as the main threat of a story that is not stingy with creatures of all kinds. As always in films in which Godzilla and King Kong are the headliners since Gareth Edwards’ feature film released in 2014.

Since the two Titans must be the heroes of the story, other creatures must threaten humans and the planet. And it doesn’t fail here with, as a bonus, the return of a monster well known to fans that we thought we wouldn’t see again in the cinema, who was deleted from one of the promotional photos.

men and gods

What about humans then? Guarantors of the spectator’s identification and the gigantism sought by the staging, they are here a little less numerous than in the previous episode, since they are quickly reduced to a small group sent to the hollow Earth (and quickly amputated of the one of its members).

Already in Godzilla vs Kong, Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry and hearing-impaired actress Kaylee Hottle are back. And the latter will have a crucial role in the plot, which puts it a little more at the center of the mythology of the shared universe launched ten years ago.

Warner Bros. Pictures

Dan Stevens, Rebecca Hall & Kaylee Hottle

This trio is joined by a new kid: Dan Stevens. Who finds director Adam Wingard after The Guest. And steals most of his scenes, in the skin of a veterinarian decked out in a shirt worthy of those of Ace Ventura.

A connection with Godzilla Minus One?

If you are one of those who were impressed by Godzilla Minus One, Oscar winner for Best Visual Effects 2024, know that this film has nothing to do with it. And that he only shares with him the presence of the famous giant lizard.

This Godzilla x Kong is the fifth feature film in the MonsterVerse, a shared universe around the Titans launched in 2014, and in which we also find the Monarch series, available on AppleTV+. And it can be seen in cinemas from April 3.
