Emmanuel Macron had announced it to the regional press, and this was confirmed on Friday April 30, 2021 by the Minister of Health Olivier Véran. Vaccination is extended to overweight and obese people from May 1, 2021. It will also be extended “to people with comorbidities, such as hypertension, diabetes, kidney failure, heart failure, or cancer”.
The opening of vaccination for all those suffering from overweight or obesity is good news, when we know the higher risks associated with this situation. Thus, 40% of deaths due to Covid-19 and 47% of patients occupying resuscitation beds are people suffering from obesity, says the National Collective of Obese Associations on France Info.

The criterion used to be able to access the vaccine is that of Body mass index. It is calculated by dividing the weight by the height squared. The World Health Organization has defined it as the standard to identify weight problems.
