  • Andrei Rublew (ATP 7) is entering the semifinals for the first time at the ATP Finals in Turin.
  • The Russian beats Stefanos Tsitsipas (ATP 3) 3: 6, 6: 3, 6: 2 in the decisive group game.
  • In the round of the last four, Rublew meets the Norwegian Casper Ruud (ATP 4) on Saturday.

For Andrei Rublev, all good things came in threes twice at the ATP Finals in Turin. On the one hand, the Russian defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas for the first time in his third attempt this year, on the other hand, the 25-year-old made it into the last four for the first time in his third participation in the year-end tournament.

At the beginning there was little that spoke for a victory for the Russian world number 7. Opponent Tsitsipas initially acted impressively safe on his own serve and only conceded Rublev two points in the entire first set. Tsitsipas got the decisive break in the 1st round in the 4th game, in which Rublew got himself into trouble with two double errors. In general, the Russian was always busy with himself in the starting phase and visibly struggled with his own performance.

Rublev turns it up

The picture changed in the middle of the second set. While Rublew was able to drastically reduce his error rate, more and more errors crept in at Tsitsipas. When the score was 4:3, Rublew used his 2nd breakball to break the service and a little later equalized the set.

The 25-year-old seamlessly continued the strong performance in the deciding set, realized a break early on and showed himself flawless in his own service. The now completely unsettled Tsitsipas did his part: The 2019 finals winner gave his opponent the second break with two double errors in a row.

Now Ruud is waiting

In his first semi-final at the ATP Finals, Rublev will face Casper Ruud (ATP 4) on Saturday at 9 p.m. Rublew has won 4 of 5 duels with the Norwegian so far. Before that, Novak Djokovic (ATP 8) will compete with Taylor Fritz (ATP 9) in the other semi-final at 2 p.m. You can see both games live on SRF Zwei.
