After Israeli reports of a drone attack from Iran, its head of state Ayatollah Ali Khamenei reiterated his threats against the Jewish state on social media. “The evil regime will be punished,” said the religious leader’s official account on Platform X, formerly Twitter. The quote comes from a speech last Wednesday. On April 1, two brigadier generals and five other members of the powerful Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) were killed in a suspected Israeli airstrike on the Iranian embassy compound in the Syrian capital Damascus. Iran’s leaders then repeatedly announced retaliation.

The US government has also confirmed the start of an Iranian air strike against Israel. US President Joe Biden will be continuously informed about the situation and will meet with his security team in the White House on Saturday afternoon for consultations, said a spokeswoman for the National Security Council. The attack will “likely last several hours.”
