A refugee rights activist briefly burst onto the court during the Australian Open final between Daniil Medvedev and Rafael Nadal on Sunday, before being cleared away by security.
Carrying a small banner that read “Abolish Refugee Detention,” the person jumped from the bleachers onto the court during the second set. She was quickly brought under control, while members of the security service also protected the two players.
The question of the treatment of refugees in Australia was recently brought to light throughout the world when the world No.1 Novak Djokovic was placed in detention in a former hotel also hosting around thirty refugees, within the framework of the conflict which clashed with Australian authorities over his vaccination status which resulted in his deportation from the country.
Already in 2015, the men’s singles final of the Australian Open, which opposed Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray, was interrupted for a few minutes by the irruption on the court of a militant demonstrator for the rights of refugees.
