Will the monarchy be over soon? The British writer Hilary Mantel now claims in an interview that there will only be two generations of kings. So Prince George will never take the throne.

In an interview with The Times, the writer Hilary Mantel, 69, spoke about the future of the monarchy. She admires Queen Elizabeth, 95, her dedication to preparing her son, Prince Charles, 72, for his inheritance, but is certain that the monarchy is not made to last.

Hilary Mantel: The royals would just be seen as celebrities

In the interview she said: “It’s hard to understand the thinking behind the monarchy in the modern world when people are only seen as celebrities.” She is convinced that the Queen and her son will do their work “as well as possible” and take it very seriously, but an end is in sight.

She said of the Prince of Wales: “He is a very deep man”, she was sure that he thought about his role and its meaning. “Kingship is so old and has a dimension of holiness,” she says. However, the royals have long ceased to have the rank they had 100 years ago.

Two generations of monarchy left – Prince George would never become king

When asked how long the monarchy would still exist, she said that she assumed that there will only be two generations. If she was right, it would mean that Prince Charles and his son Prince William, 39, could still ascend the throne, according to the “Dailymail”. William’s son, Prince George, 8, would then be the first in the royal line not to be crowned.

Hilary Mantel is a British author, best known for her series of novels “Wolf Hall” (Eng. “Wolves”), in which she writes about the rise of the blacksmith’s son Thomas Cromwell to Minister at the court of Henry VIII. Mantel is the first woman to win the Booker Prize twice.
