Dominique de Villepin was the guest of Europe 1 this Thursday morning. At the microphone of Sonia Mabrouk, the former Prime Minister spoke about the debate on the autonomy of Corsica, launched by the executive. He said there were legitimate fears about this issue because sometimes there was “something automatic” between autonomy and “independence drift”.
Dominique de Villepin fears that the debate on the autonomy of Corsica leads to a “drift of independence”. This is what the former Prime Minister said at the microphone of Sonia Mabrouk this Thursday morning on Europe 1. “We are in exceptional and dramatic circumstances”, he lamented, believing that it was not necessary close the door to this debate, even if it aroused fears.
A temptation to violence in Corsica
“There is an emotion that exists in Corsica and also a temptation to violence that must be resolved and taken into account”, assures the former Minister of Foreign Affairs. “Between autonomy and the drift of independence, one can think that there is something automatic”, he adds.
A necessary debate
At the same time, Dominique de Villepin wants Corsica to continue on its way. “We can clearly see what they have already done, from independence, towards nationalism within the framework of the Republic. We can clearly see that there is something to be found”. But the election campaign is certainly not the time to settle this question, according to Dominique de Villepin. “It’s a time that can still allow questions to be asked”, nuances the former Prime Minister for whom the opening of this debate between the different candidates is “a good thing”.
For Dominique de Villepin, we must “open the debate” and “certainly not close it” or make “promises that we cannot or do not want to keep”.
