After several weeks of debate, Corsican elected officials and the Minister of the Interior found common ground to recognize the autonomy of the Isle of Beauty. If the current writing were to be adopted by French parliamentarians, the island could adopt certain laws, such as for example, on town planning.

Finally ! The Corsican government and elected officials found common ground this Monday evening to recognize the autonomy of the Isle of Beauty. The project, which must be included in the Constitution, was launched by Emmanuel Macron last fall. And although the discussions dragged on, they finally came to fruition, to the satisfaction of Laurent Marcangeli, deputy for Corsica-du-Sud.

“I believe that we are going in the right direction. It is the meaning of recognition and it is the meaning of a new stage in this process of autonomy that we are calling for,” he confides to micro d’Europe 1. Gérald Darmanin, for his part, evokes considerable progress and welcomes a consensus obtained without crossing the red lines set by the executive. “Corsica will be able to liberalize administrative constraints which prevent it from living. And this power of adaptation does not, however, create the separation of Corsica from the Republic, since we are talking neither about the people, nor the status of resident, nor the possibility of having it”, assures the Minister of the Interior.

A long road still before autonomy

Concretely, if the current writing were adopted, the island could, for example, adapt its laws relating to land or town planning, the precise scope of its powers nevertheless having to be submitted to Parliament. The fact remains that the road is still long. The text must now be voted on by the Corsican Assembly then by the National Assembly and the Senate, as well as 3/5 of the Congress meeting in Versailles.

A major obstacle given the reluctance already expressed by several parliamentarians.
