Available from today for 2024 – High demand for e-vignettes leads to longer waiting times – News

  • The motorway vignette for 2024 will be available electronically for a whole year for the first time from December 1st.
  • The adhesive variant also remains available.
  • According to the spokesman for the Federal Office of Customs and Border Security (BAZG), the high demand is causing the payment process and sending of the receipt to be delayed.

The e-vignette was introduced on August 1st. However, so far only the 2023 vignette could be purchased, which most drivers had already bought at the beginning of the year. The electronic offer is only now becoming relevant for many people. The e-vignette is available via the “Via Portal” of the Federal Office of Customs and Border Security (BAZG) or via www.e-vignette.ch.

On Friday morning it became apparent that the high demand for the electronic vignette was causing problems with the website. The Federal Office of Customs and Border Security writes: “The demand for e-vignettes is currently very high. This can lead to delays in the payment process and the sending of the receipt as a PDF.”

By 1 a.m., 2,200 e-vignettes had already been sold

Simon Erny, media spokesman at BAZG, confirmed to SRF News the problems caused by the high demand for the e-vignette. “Between midnight and one in the morning we had 2,200 purchases on the site. From six o’clock in the morning, demand increased more and more, so that by twelve o’clock we were able to record a good 55,000 hits.” This is also the reason why there can be delays in the payment process and in sending receipts.

According to Erny, the BAZG tested the capacities in advance. However, it is always difficult to make advance predictions about the stability of the system. “We are working hard on a solution together with our external payment provider.” The payment process has been stable again since midday, says Erny.

Same validity period

The offer for the adhesive version remains, which Erny also points out. The sticker will only be abolished when its share of total sales falls below ten percent – i.e. around one million units. This is what Parliament decided.

The 2024 motorway vignette, whether electronic or adhesive, is valid for the same length of time as before – from December 1, 2023 to January 31, 2025. The vignette costs 40 francs.

The introduction of the electronic version took years. In 2017, the Federal Council carried out a consultation. Due to the controversial results, in 2018 he advocated the introduction of a voluntary e-vignette, which would be offered in parallel to the previous adhesive vignette.

The method of checking the e-vignette was controversial in parliament. The councils ultimately agreed on automated controls using fixed systems and mobile devices. These controls should not take place permanently and across the board, but rather on a risk-related and random basis.
