In Avatar: The Way of the Water, in theaters since December 14 and already seen by 10 million spectators in France, many new characters now tread the forests (then the shores) of Pandora. Alongside Jake Sully and Neytiri, we can discover their children Kiri, Neteyam, Lo’ak and Tuk, as well as a young human boy played by Jack Champion, who spends his days with them.

The latter, who is actually the biological son of Colonel Miles Quaritch, is called Miles Socorro, but is called Spider by his Na’vi playmates. Where does this nickname come from, and this strange comparison with a spider? Is this a reference to Spider-Man? To the character of Michael Imperioli in Les Affranchis by Martin Scorsese?

As we learn between the pages of the comic-book Avatar: The High Groundpublished by Dark Horse and whose action is located between the first two films of the saga, the young boy inherited this nickname shortly after the death of his mother, Paz Socorro, killed during the final battle of Avatar 1 .

Soon, his love of adventure and climbing took him out of human buildings, and through the jungles of Pandora, where he befriended Jake Sully’s family. The young Kiri, who has become his best friend, has also offered him another little name, qualifying him in effect as “Monkey Boy” (“the Child-Monkey”).
