AWS Introduces New Xeon-Powered EC2 Instances


Amazon Web Services introduced a new variety of EC2 instances powered by Intel Xeon chips, capable of delivering the fastest Electronic Design Automation (EDA) processing capability yet.

The new Amazon EC2 X2iezn instances use the same Intel Xeon Scalable (Cascade Lake) processors as the previously announced EC2 M5zn instances. In these X2iezn deployments, these chips will run at a clock speed of 4.5 GHz and will be paired with 1.5 TB of memory. AWS says these new instances can deliver “up to 55% better price-performance ratio per vCPU than X1e instances.”

Deployments of the new product type for customers will range from the x2iezn.2xlarge configuration (8 vCPUs, 256 GB RAM, 25 Gb/s bandwidth, and 3.17 Gb/s bandwidth optimized for Elastic Block Storage (EBS )) to the high-end x2iezn.12 xlarge and x2iezn.metal configuration (48 vCPU, 1536 GB of RAM, 100 Gb/s of bandwidth, and 19 Gb/s of EBS-optimized bandwidth).

New instances available in Europe

Other features include the ability to disable Intel Hyper-Threading Technology for workloads that perform better on single-threaded CPUs, support for non-uniform memory access (NUMA) on high-end versions, and extended memory footprints per VCPU.

Amazon EC2 X2iezn instances are available now in AWS European, US, and Asian regions.

They can be acquired through the company’s On-Demand Instance interface, as well as through Reserved Instances, its Savings Plan, and Spot Instances. AWS also notes that Dedicated Instances and Dedicated Hosts are available for EC2 X2iezn deployments.
