Bad news for Netflix and Co.: The 10 most successful series in 2023 come from TV!

NETFLIX

Streaming services like Netflix or Disney+ were in high demand in 2023, but not their own productions. The top 10 is dominated by TV series.

21 million years. That’s how long film and series fans in the USA have been using streaming services such as Netflix, Apple TV+ or Disney+ in 2023. A clear increase, in 2022 it was “only” 17 million years. Basically, of course, good news for all streaming providers, but the current figures from the market research company Nielsen also reveal an unexpected trend.

The 10 most popular series in the stream were exclusively TV productions that were licensed by streaming services but not produced themselves. A hard blow for services like Netflix, which has been vying for subscribers’ favor for years, primarily with expensive in-house productions.

Second spring for TV productions

Suits

At the top of the streaming charts in 2023 is the legal series “Suits”, which received a huge boost when it launched on Netflix in the USA in the summer of 2023. 57.7 billion minutes were streamed here, breaking a record set by “The Office” in 2020.

By the way, both series are productions by Universal and therefore actually have a permanent home on the US streamer Peacock. Both series were only really successful when they were shown on Netflix. You can find the complete streaming top 10 from 2023 here:

However, the success of these series can be easily explained. Since these are long-running and often already completed series, there are already numerous episodes. There are 141 episodes for “Suits”, 281 for “The Big Bang Theory” and 443 for “NCIS”. A clear advantage over streaming series, of which only a few seasons exist so far.

With this thought in mind, “Ted Lasso” did particularly well. Apple TV+ production, which (presumably) ended in 2023 with Season 3, brought in 16.9 billion minutes streamed with just 34 episodes. It is the most successful streaming series of the year and also the only Apple production in the top 10 streaming productions.

Among the Netflix series, “The Night Agent”, “Ginny & Georgia”, “Virgin River”, “Love is Blind”, “Gabby’s Dollhouse”, “Outer Banks” and “The Lincoln Lawyer” were ahead. Not a bad cut, so 7 of the 10 most successful stream productions come from Netflix. Amazon Prime Video and Disney+, like Apple TV+, were only represented once, namely with “Jack Ryan” and “The Mandalorian”.

A consequence of these statistics is a new series from the “Suits” universe. “Suits LA” is about new lawyers, so apart from the subject matter and the title, the series has little to do with the successful original. Since the series will run exclusively on Peacock, it will hardly be able to build on the success of the series on Netflix and will rather suffer the fate of the flopped “Suits” spin-off “Pearson”.
