These three series were a hit on Netflix when they were released, rising to the top of the platform’s views and yet the streaming service purely and simply canceled them. Three Spanish fictions which had found their audience and were arousing expectations for new seasons thus saw their destiny sealed forever.
It’s almost no longer a surprise when Netflix announces a series cancellation – when the American giant deigns to announce it – but several cancellations in quick succession still have the effect of a bombshell with subscribers.
Spanish content takes a hit at Netflix
Still, the ax fell for three Spanish series. And these fictions affected by the summer cancellations are Bienvenidos à Edén, Hasta el cielo: The series and Every time we loved each other.
Created by Joaquín Górriz and Guillermo López Sánchez, Bienvenidos à Edén is a thriller that tells the story of the survival of five young people trapped on an island called “Eden” after a mysterious party.
The gang discovers that the expected paradise is actually a hell full of secrets held by a small group comparable to a sect. This series was “lucky” to have 2 seasons, and the last episodes were released on April 21.
Sequel to the film of the same name which was a hit on Netflix, Hasta el cielo: The series, still written by Jorge Guerricaechevarria, tells how the wife of a deceased criminal decides to join a gang in order to provide for the needs of his son, towards and against everything and especially his own father.
Finally, Every time we loved each other was the latest series from Carlos Montero, the co-creator of Élite. This romantic fiction in 8 episodes narrates the tumultuous relationship between Irene (Georgina Amorós) and Julio (Franco Masini) over twenty years.
It’s amazing to see Hispanic content suffer this fate from Netflix given that Spain is one of the most prolific and profitable countries for the platform. The American giant seems to be rethinking its content creation and distribution strategy for the end of the year and the year to come.
