Bad news for your EDF bill, electricity prices rise by 10% on August 1

After a 15% increase in January, the regulated electricity tariff will again increase by 10% in August. For the consumer, this government decision represents an average of 160 euros more per year. The objective of the executive is to reduce the costs for public finances.

After 18 months when the increase was maintained at 4% in the face of soaring energy market prices, after the 15% increase in the sales regulation tariff (TRV) in January 2023, the price of electricity will again climb by 10% on August 1st. The government has seized the Higher Energy Council for a formal consultation in this regard, reveals the newspaper The echoes this Tuesday. The information was then confirmed by the Ministers for the Economy and Energy Transition, while the Energy Regulation Commission (CRE) recommended an increase of 75%.

For blue tariff customers who heat with electricity, the average increase should be 160 euros per year after that of 240 euros at the beginning of the year. In total, nearly 21 million households are subscribed to TRV. From August 1, the tariff shield will continue to cover the protection of French people for more than a third of their bill (37%), compared to 43% today, the government calculates in its press release. According to an executive source quoted by Reuters, there will be no further increase before February 1, 2024.

A tariff shield for low-income households?

This announcement is part of the government’s choice to put an end to the tariff shield for electricity in 2025. We must get out of the policy of the checkbook and Whatever it is, which have been exceptionally effective, had justified the minister last April. Getting out of the shields (electricity in 2025 and gas in 2023, Ed) must be done gradually so as not to worry our compatriots, again assured the boss of Bercy. So here is the first step.

Will EDF’s regulated electricity tariff also disappear?

Last Thursday on RTL, the Minister of Public Accounts, Gabriel Attal, also recalled the need to save money. The government won, at the end of last year, 110 billion euros between 2021 and 2023 the cost of the energy shield for households, communities and businesses. The progressive end of tariff shields on electricity and gas would represent almost 14 billion euros in savingsaccording to its projections.
