balayage on black hair: which shade to choose?

You have black hair and you want to have it lightened without going through a coloring? You do not know which shade to choose to bring reflections to your hair? Follow the guide.

You have black, brown or dark brown hair. You find them dull, they lack reflections and light. You plan to clear them up. But the most important thing for you is that it remains natural. What technique to use … streaks, balayage, hair contouring? What shade to choose: caramel, honey, blond? It is not always easy to find your way around without the expert advice of a specialist hairdresser. It must be said that there are so many nuances … Damien Boissinot, hairstylist at René Furterer helps us to see more clearly.

What shade to choose?

"When you are brown, or dark brown and you want to make streaks or a sweep, it is better to focus on warm colors and not to go too light, too blonde", informs Damien Boissinot. The goal is to bring light to the hair while avoiding too much contrast. So the ideal is to choose shades close to your natural base. "The colors glossy brown, honey, even red tones will be better suited to brunettes on short hair as on long hair", says expert René Furterer.

Which technique to use?

Streaks, highlights, hair contouring … there are several techniques depending on the desired effect. "The sweep is normally more discreet, more natural than the wicks", specifies the hairdresser. "When we start on a sweep, the" knitting "of the hair is finer. The wicking technique involves knitting the thicker wicks ”. Everything therefore depends on the desire and the desired result: "On fine hair, we will rather advise the scan so that it mixes more easily with the natural color or bleached or colored hair so as not to create an overly marked effect", specifies the specialist before adding: "Small useful precision sweeps like wicks can be applied with a discoloration or a color or even both". The hair contouring trend consists in lightening certain areas of the hair to create optical effects. This light and shadow play technique adapts to all face shapes. It is about playing with the tones to bring more or less depth, volume to the hair. The dark tones are there to "shorten" the shape of the face unlike the light tones that "lengthen" the shape of the face.

What care for hair?

"The different techniques work with shampoos for colored hair and a mask once you can apply once a week on half lengths and ends at home. This helps protect and revive the color ”, says David Boissinot. "Every two months, we can make a sweeping or wicking connection on the natural line or the borders to revive everything", this will avoid having an apparent root effect. It is advisable to iron in the hands of a hairdresser, in the salon, after three or four months.

What advice on a daily basis?

"The best advice obviously concerns above all the use of suitable shampoos and care", insists David Boissinot. " But I still have a tip, it is that unlike the color and provided that you are well protected with suitable products, these techniques skate very nicely in the sun, in contact with sea water and in the wind … so long live the summer!
