Designer Barbara Becker likes to dress “brightly and colorfully”. These are their trend pieces for the summer.
Barbara Becker (54) has been successful in the fashion, beauty and fitness business for years. Above all, fashion has always played “a big role” for the ex-wife of tennis legend Boris Becker (54), as she said in an interview. A passion that she apparently passed on to her two sons Elias (21) and Noah (27), who both work in the fashion industry today. The 54-year-old was in front of the camera in South Africa for the new Lascana summer campaign “Your World. Your Rules. Your Style”. The designer swears by these trend pieces in summer.
What role does fashion play in your life?
Barbara Becker: Fashion has always played a major role for me because it allows me to express my personal mood and my lust for life. During Corona, fashion wasn’t that important to me, but that’s changing again … I generally like to dress brightly and colorfully. I like things that reflect my love of life. Above all, I pay attention to quality, because then you simply benefit from it for longer. At the moment, I also buy a lot secondhand and combine it with the parts that I already have in my closet. I find that exciting.
Your sons are both involved in the fashion industry. How do you and your upbringing influence it?
Becker: Not really any more. It stops at some point – namely when the guys find their own style and thus develop their personal passion for colors and patterns, and thus underline their personal style. Which, by the way, I find very cool. I no longer interfere.
The motto of this year’s Lascana summer campaign is “Your World. Your Rules. Your Style”. When did you discover your current fashion style for yourself?
Becker: I’m a kid in the 80s and back then we were allowed to try out a lot when it came to fashion. And I am grateful for that. A lot of things were difficult in retrospect, others were nice (laughs). But it was a time when a lot was allowed and you weren’t stared at. It was possible to express yourself through your clothes. And that’s how I’ve always kept it. For big occasions I often wore clothes that I designed and made myself. Later on I had a lot of friends who were professional couturiers. Many of my friends are still doing fashion and I am allowed to wear their clothes. That’s nice, because it’s not just about my mood, but also about reflecting the trend of the time and being able to show the inspiration of others
What advice do you have for women who struggle with fashion issues and have not yet found their own style?
Becker: Creating a basic wardrobe, that means a selection of favorite pieces that you can wear up and down and wonderfully combine with new items over and over again. Sometimes with sneakers, sometimes with accessories. With always new eye-catchers. Many things can also be found secondhand and you can also surprise them with them.
Which women do you admire for their fashion style?
Becker: Women whose looks you can already tell that they have a special storytelling.
Which fashion trends do you currently prefer to wear?
Becker: Clearly: athleisure wear. So things that you can cuddle with on the sofa or walk around in it all day. But I stopped wearing the whole baggy look where pants and jacket don’t go together (laughs). I pay attention to quality, because these things often have to go into the washing machine. I always try to wear a little leo and always a little color. For me it is important that you can move around easily in your clothes, both on the red carpet and in everyday life. That’s why I have two wardrobes, one for larger occasions and the other for the days at home. In the second wardrobe you can also find a lot of things in which you can run to the train or the airport.
Summer is approaching in great strides: Which trends are particularly popular this year?
Becker: Oversized blazers and summer overalls! During the shoot for the current Lascana summer collection, I fell in love with a light, airy model from the current Fashion Cruise Collection. I also dared to wear Bermuda shorts and shorts again this summer. On the other hand, I cannot make friends with the very small bags that are currently in fashion, because nothing fits in there. And I always have too much with me.
What is your absolute must-have in summer?
Becker: A foldable sun hat. You can protect yourself from the sun on the go, because sometimes sun protection factor 50 alone is not enough.
