Clear announcement: DFB wants to extend Nagelsmann’s contract

There is currently a lot of speculation about the new Bayern coach. Julian Nagelsmann is one of Munich’s top candidates. But now the DFB is making it clear that it wants to extend the contract with the national coach after the home European Championship. All doors are open to Nagelsmann, and there could also be interested parties abroad.
Despite the well-known competition, Rudi Völler hopes that national coach Julian Nagelsmann will shape the future of the German national team beyond the home European Championships. “That would be our great wish,” said the sports director of the German Football Association before the DFB Cup semi-final between Bayer Leverkusen and Fortuna Düsseldorf when asked about a contract extension for the hotly sought-after coach at Sky.
Völler is aware of the great competition. “He has a lot of requests,” said the 63-year-old. According to media reports, Nagelsmann can easily imagine a return to FC Bayern. According to “Kicker”, the coach is one of the top candidates for the German record champions. Liverpool FC and FC Barcelona are also looking for new coaches for the coming season.
Völler relies on the national team factor. Training them “is something special,” he said: “It’s the most important team in Germany, you noticed that in the two international matches when this euphoria arose. I think he likes that. We have to discuss that calmly . He knows the signals that we would like to continue with him.”
Nagelsmann “can do it”
Even before the victories in France and against the Netherlands, the DFB had made it clear that they wanted to continue with Nagelsmann beyond the European Championships. “He can do it,” said Völler.
Like Nagelsmann, Völler himself was actually only supposed to stay with the DFB until the end of the European Championship. But there has long been the idea that Völler should be extended beyond that, and Nagelsmann is also a supporter of this idea. Völler gave at least a small hint about this. “I like it at the moment, let’s wait and see,” he said.
BVB boss Hans-Joachim Watzke would also like to see Nagelsmann continue as national coach. “The DFB should now try to extend Julian’s contract. And if the DFB manages to sign him for longer, then it would be good for German football,” said the managing director of the Bundesliga soccer club Borussia Dortmund in the podcast “Spielmacher – The EM talk with Sebastian Hellmann and 360Media”. Watzke is also vice president of the German Football Association and said about the possible contract talks with Nagelsmann: “I’m staying out of it a bit so that no one says that I had any influence.”
