Beatrice Egli: She talks about “unhealthy extremes in love”

Beatrice Egli is one of the most famous singers in the German hit scene. In the last year she experienced a big change – in an interview, Egli talks about new beginnings, role models and challenges.

With her new album “Balance” she conquered the top of the German album charts in the week of publication and is considered the most successful national singer of all time in her home country, Switzerland. But how did it all actually begin? After Beatrice Egli, 35, won the tenth season of “Deutschland sucht den Superstar” in 2013, she received her first recording contract with Universal Music. After nine years, the collaboration ended in the summer of 2022 and the “Mein Herz” interpreter switched to Label Ariola. “I had to find new confidence in myself,” says the singer in an interview and reveals why she had to “grow a thick skin”.

Beatrice Egli in the GALA interview

Alexander Nebe: Why did you give your new album the title “Balance”?
Beatrice Egli: It is so important for all of us to maintain a healthy balance in life and to avoid unhealthy extremes, such as in love, sport, nutrition or work. If the balance is not right, then we are dissatisfied in the long run and look for changes.

Is that the case with you too?
I, too, keep asking myself what is really important to me and where I want to go in life. Basically, I love my existence and live my dream with my music career! Nevertheless, in the summer of 2022 I felt that I wanted to make a new start and that I had an irrepressible desire for new influences. For me, there is one constant in life, and that is change.

Beatrice Egli: “I had to let go of the familiar”

The result of your search for meaning was that you separated from your former music label and your creative team?
Exactly! And that was a difficult and also very emotional process after nine years. I had to let go of the familiar, leave a lot of security behind me, and sometimes also dependencies, and through this process I found new confidence in myself.

The track “Incomparable” from the new album is a perfect empowerment song for all women who doubt themselves from time to time. Since when have you been at peace with yourself and accepted yourself completely?
In terms of externals such as figure and optics, I found myself very early on, which is certainly also due to the fact that I was scrutinized and mercilessly judged by a mass of people through social media right from the start of my career.

At times it was really extreme what I had to listen to about my figure or my appearance.

But that also gave me a thick skin and I learned to deal with it and, above all, to stay with myself.

“I am my own role model”

Do you see yourself as incomparable?
Absolutely! I go my very own path in life and it is definitely incomparable. Again and again I am asked about role models in interviews – and then I always think to myself: Well, my picture doesn’t exist anywhere and that’s a good thing! So I can be my own role model every day. But of course there are also traits about me that I don’t particularly like.

For example?
I’m an incredibly emotional and impulsive woman, which definitely comes in handy on stage! Unfortunately, that’s why my temperament sometimes gets the better of me in my private life too. As a result, I sometimes throw bad and unfair words at people around me, which I regret afterwards… Unfortunately, I haven’t really managed to get my emotions under control until today. But it’s getting better.

Sport is supposed to be a good valve to reduce excess power. How about your routines?
Especially when I travel a lot for work, I find it difficult to get regular training. Basically, I prefer to do sports in the morning. I got used to it about two years ago when I climbed the Matterhorn.

Which is a challenge even for experienced and extremely sporty climbers…
Oh yes, and as unique as this experience was for me; In retrospect, I probably wouldn’t do it again. That was extremely awesome! But with a great side effect: I had to learn to train very early because we sometimes had to start at 4:30 am.

Beatrice keeps her love life private

After ten years of career, how do you deal with the fact that your love life is of great interest to millions of people and thus also to the press?
I can now deal with it better and more relaxed. But there are still moments when it hits me unexpectedly hard and is extremely annoying. Yes, I know that I am a public figure and that people are therefore also interested in Beatrice as a private person.

But if that goes so far that I advise some of the men on my team not to get too close to me when working together, otherwise they can very quickly be considered my new friend, then something goes very wrong.

Other celebrities deal with the topic of love life quite offensively and also see it as part of the job. Why not you too?
Because my private life is my absolute safe space: the place I want to protect at all costs and like a lion mama. For me, this is the fortress within which I can be my private Beatrice. Within which I am loved for all that I am or am not. For my private life, I would immediately put everything else on hold. And if the reports are encroaching and boundaries are crossed, then I fight back. Otherwise, I try to take it all with humor.

That looks like?
By choosing the silliest and most absurd stories about me of the month with people from my team or friends and then we read each other the nonsense that is there and have a great time.
