But the New Year’s Eve tradition is not known to all villagers.
Concerned calls were received by the community and the police.
A New Year’s Eve custom caused a stir in Meilen. On the night of December 31st, Trychlers drove through the village with tractors. Concerned residents informed the police about disturbing the peace. They suspected a Freedom Tryp rally. As Gerard Schaub, deputy chief of police, said at the request of the «Zürichsee-Zeitung», a patrol was then deployed to the scene of the incident.
But it turned out that it wasn’t the Freiheitstrychler who were at work, but the Meilemer Söihundscheibe, a local carnival club. The so-called “Lärmete” has an annual tradition in miles, as the municipality confirms at the request of the newspaper. So the old year will be heralded. The Söihund disc are not apolitical either. Every year they deliver a message. This year, the carnival people demonstrated in front of the parish hall against the new BZO. “We welcome the custom and think it’s cool that the tradition continues,” says community clerk Didier Mayenzet to the “Zürichsee-Zeitung”.
But apparently there are some residents of Meilen who have no knowledge of New Year’s Eve custom. The community itself has also received some concerned inquiries, as the community clerk says.
