Because of fleeing the Taliban: The US is making it easier for Afghans to immigrate

The US makes immigration easier for Afghans

Tens of thousands of Afghan refugees have reached the United States since the United States withdrew from Afghanistan. Among them are many former supporters of the US troops. As a thank you, Washington wants to give them better access to the green card.

The US makes immigration easier for Afghan refugees. As the Homeland Security Department announced, the approximately 70,000 Afghans who arrived in the USA on July 30th will have easier access to residence permits – the green card – and to various documents for work permits. The program, entitled “Allies Welcome”, provides, among other things, that registration fees, which can cost several thousand dollars, will no longer apply to Afghan refugees.

“By granting them simplified procedures and a waiver of costs, we are opening up opportunities for our Afghan allies and helping them to build a new life more quickly in our country,” said Homeland Security Minister Alejandro Mayorkas. He recalled the “valuable support” given to the Afghan local staff during the 20-year US military operation in Afghanistan.

After the decision to withdraw international troops from Afghanistan, more than 120,000 people were taken out of the country via a military airlift in the summer. Tens of thousands of local Afghan workers and their relatives stayed behind. They had worked with the international troops and now fear the revenge of the radical Islamic Taliban. They had taken power again in Kabul in mid-August.
