  • The World Economic Forum should have taken place in Davos in January.

  • Because of the Omikron variant of the coronavirus, the WEF is canceled at short notice.

  • The meeting will now be held online.

The annual conference of the World Economic Forum in Davos, planned for January 17-21, 2022, has been postponed. The reason is the corona pandemic, said a spokesman for the German press agency on Monday.

Instead, participants will take part in a series of “State of the World” sessions, at which world leaders come together online to “work out solutions to the world’s most pressing challenges,” as the WEF wrote in a press release. The current pandemic situation makes it extremely difficult to hold a global meeting on site. The WEF emphasizes the close cooperation with the Swiss government at all levels in the run-up to the event.

Despite the meeting’s strict health protocols, the portability of Omikron and its impact on travel and mobility have made a postponement necessary.

“The postponement of the annual meeting will not prevent progress through the continued digital gathering of executives from business, government and civil society,” said Professor Klaus Schwab, founder and executive chairman of the World Economic Forum. “Cooperation between the public and private sectors has evolved during the pandemic and will continue to do so. We look forward to bringing the world’s leading personalities together in person soon, ”continued Schwab.

The second rejection in two years

With a few exceptions, the foundation has held its annual meeting in Davos for decades. Thousands of entrepreneurs, politicians and politicians meet there to exchange ideas on pressing issues in business and society. It is always made up of top-class heads of government and company executives from all over the world.

This year, too, the meeting was postponed and finally canceled entirely. It was supposed to take place in Singapore first in May, then in August. But the plans were also ruined by the pandemic.
