At the 3rd Grand Slam tournament in 2022, Russian and Belarusian players will probably not be allowed to start due to the Ukraine war.
Bad news for Daniil Medvedev, Andrei Rublev and Co.: In all likelihood, no Russian and Belarusian players will be allowed to play in Wimbledon. The reason for this is Russia’s invasion of Ukraine almost two months ago.
On the website Sportico the news was first spread before it was New York Times and the Times has been confirmed. No statement has yet been received from the OC.
Numbers 2 and 8 in the world affected
This means that the current world numbers 2 and 8 should be missing in the men’s tableau at the lawn tournament. For women, the exclusion of Aryna Sabalenka (BLR/WTA 4) Anastasiya Pavlyuchenkowa (WTA 15), for example, would affect two top 15 players in the WTA ranking.
Wimbledon (from June 27th) would be the first organizer to exclude tennis professionals because of the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine. On the ATP and WTA tour, Russian and Belarusian players are allowed to compete under a neutral flag. However, the two countries were excluded from nation events after the start of the war.
