When an important goal is scored at Dortmund’s Westfalenstadion, things quickly spiral out of control. The spectators tumble wildly over each other, unintentionally almost tear themselves to the ground on the huge standing room grandstand and those in the seats throw their arms in the air and also throw beer around them. Sometimes because they are so happy and sometimes because it’s just part of it. No matter what the reason, the spectators in the rows in front are doused with beer.
Unforgotten a scene that happened years ago at a Champions League. Borussia Dortmund had lost the first leg of the quarter-finals at Real Madrid 0:3 and was actually already eliminated. Then Marco Reus scored twice in the first half and a spectator in the stadium was beside himself with anger. “I’m going crazy here,” he said angrily: “Alcohol-free beer and beer showers don’t work at all. Nobody needs the Champions League.”

“I can tell you, we got the beer shower here, but hey, let’s take it with us,” explained the commentator on DAZN. And then suddenly Michael Ballack almost interrupted him. The vice world champion from 2002 has been working as an expert for the streaming platform since this season and got wet. “Asi, ey,” scolded the 46-year-old. His next remark, which he was obviously about to make, was no longer audible. The fans cheered the goal so loudly that everything else was lost.
Ballack was definitely in good company. The official Chelsea FC Twitter account also reported the Dortmund goal with a delay. “Sorry for that, the admin got a beer from above,” it said in a message to the 24 million followers of the traditional English club. A reporter from the “Daily Telegraph” also joined the ranks of the disgruntled. “If there was ever an endorsement for not taking beer into the stands in England,” wrote Matt Law, “it was here in Dortmund. So many beer mugs are flying around here after the goal. Absolute nonsense.”
Since it then remained at 1:0, no more beer cups flew. Ballack was able to comment on the game, Chelsea tweeted the loss and Matt Law threw his analysis into the keys.
