During a visit to Ukraine, Germany’s top military discussed further military cooperation with the country attacked by Russia. “I want to assure that Germany will support Ukraine for as long as it is necessary,” said Bundeswehr Inspector General Carsten Breuer, according to a statement from Ukraine’s Defense Ministry. Germany and Ukraine could learn from each other. “I believe that the close cooperation between our countries serves to strengthen security in Europe,” he was quoted as saying.
The Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov thanked for the weapons received so far. “The quality of the German technology was personally checked by me,” said the 56-year-old accordingly. Resnikov called on Berlin to deliver warships to Ukraine. “Our common task is to build a strong system of international security architecture, and safety of navigation in the Black and Azov seas is an important element in this system,” the Ukrainian stressed.
Kiev had already requested ships from Germany several times in the past. Russia has completely conquered the Ukrainian part of the Azov Sea coast after its invasion more than 14 months ago. The previous flagship of the Ukrainian fleet, the frigate “Hetman Sahajdachnyj”, was sunk by the Ukrainians themselves immediately after the start of the war.
