If the household appliances market shows a slight decline in 2023, the French remain fond of home appliances. Sales remain at a high level, driven by small household appliances.

The French remain attached to the household appliances sector. This is confirmed by a study published by GIFAM, the group of home appliance brands. Despite a year 2023 marked by inflation and a drop in household purchasing power, sales of household appliances have generally held up well and represent a turnover of 9.5 billion euros, a drop only 2.2% compared to 2022, but an increase of 10% compared to 2019. In total, 63.7 million devices were sold in France.

Small household appliances are still popular

In detail, small household appliances remain the most active sector, with 49.1 million devices sold, for a turnover of 3.7 billion euros. French consumers have favored devices dedicated to cleaning the floor such as robot vacuum cleaners or stick vacuum cleaners. The sector has also grown by 3.5%, while stick vacuum cleaners are blowing up the counters, with sales up 27%.

Cooking robots are also popular (+13.6% turnover compared to 2022), as are devices dedicated to preparing breakfast. Espresso machines are of course the stars of this category. Consumers seem inclined to enjoy better quality coffee, while limiting the waste produced by other devices, such as capsule coffee makers.

The airfryer is the sensation of the year 2023 in the world of household appliances. The oil-free fryer sees its turnover tripled in just one year, and one million copies sold, all manufacturers combined.

Large household appliances are suffering the effects of a gloomy economic context

Home comfort is not experiencing the same popularity this year, with sales down 12.3%. Although sales of mobile radiators and fans declined throughout the year, French consumers seem to want to equip themselves with combined solutions, such as air purifiers, sales of which increased slightly by 1.5%.

Finally, large household appliances remain the sector that weighs the most in terms of turnover (5.8 billion euros for 14.6 million devices sold), but suffered a decline of 3.6% after several years. continued increase.

Cold is down 4.9% in value compared to 2022. It is better for dishwashers, washing machines and dryers, with a contained drop of 1.5% in the figure. business, while cooking (built-in ovens, hoods, microwaves) suffered a severe drop of 4.6%. Continuing tensions in the real estate market may explain these falls in sales.

Consumers are also encouraged to repair their devices rather than replace them, in particular with the creation of the Qualirépar label, which grants a bonus to each consumer to help them finance the repair of their device by an approved professional.
