For the very first time, this important position will therefore be occupied by a black and openly lesbian woman.. “She will be the first black and openly LGBTQ+ woman” to this post, wrote the one she will succeed. She will give a voice to many people and she will allow many to have big dreams.” Very moved by this appointment, Karine Jean-Pierre struggled to hold back her tears in the face of the journalists invited to the White House. “It’s a historic moment and I realize that. I understand how important it is for so many people”she explained.
Before her, only one other black woman, Judy Smith, had served as deputy White House spokeswoman under President George HW Bush in 1991. “Woman, Black, Gay and Mom: I’m Everything Trump Hates”, she explained in 2018 in a video for the organization MoveOn. Born in Martinique 44 years ago to Haitian parents, Karine Jean-Pierre grew up in the United States where her family immigrated. In New York, her father worked as a taxi driver and her mother as a home caregiver. For years, she has shared the life of a journalist of the chain CNN with which she has a daughter of whom she publishes many pictures on her Instagram account. Accustomed to the exercise of the State, the future spokesperson for the White House worked on the two campaigns of Barack Obama, in 2008 then in 2012, then on that of Joe Biden in 2020 before joining his team in Washington .
Karine Jean-Pierre: “It won’t always be easy but the reward will be incredible”
After having studied in “public administration” at the prestigious Columbia University, Karine Jean-Pierre began her active life in the associative world before joining politics where she campaigned for mental health. In recent years, she explained that she had been the victim of sexual assault as a child, having suffered from depression until she attempted suicide. Asked about the message she wanted to deliver to young Americans after her appointment, Karine Jean-Pierre was clear: “If you work very hard for a goal, it will happen. Yes, you will suffer hard knocks, you will go through difficult times and it will not always be easy but the reward will be incredible, especially if you stay true to who you are”.
