Black Mirror Season 6 is filled with reference to the show itself. Did you catch your eye during your dystopian binge-watching on Netflix? Warning, spoilers on some episodes!
The most famous dystopian anthology has returned to Netflix for a season 6. These 5 new episodes of black-mirror still explore the dark sides of humanity (although technologies are mentioned less than before). The new season is also filled with references… to the anthology itself. They are sometimes quite discreet if one does not remember each old episode of the series.
Streamberry is full of referrals
From the first episode, Joan is awfulthe references are very numerous, in particular because they are condensed on the images that can be observed on the fictitious Streamberry platform (inspired by Netflix).
Several fictions shown on the screen are winks:
- The Callow Years = The National Anthem
This documentary refers to Michael Callow… who became British Prime Minister in the very first episode of season 1 of black-mirror.
- Finding Ritman = Bandersnatch
In the image from Finding Ritman, Will Poulter can be seen in his Colin Ritman character. It is a direct nod to Bandersnatchthe interactive episode of black-mirror.
- Loch Henry is available
An early reference: The Loch Henry documentary, directed by the characters from Episode 2, is available on Streamberry’s screen in Episode 1.
The title of this mysterious fiction obviously makes one think of San Juniperoone of the best episodes of BlackMirror.
The show hotshot also present on Streamberry is from the second episode (Fifteen Million Merits) from season 1 of black-mirrora kind of version of the New Star.
All Loch Henry stickers
Did you pay attention to Davis and Pia’s computers? Each sticker pasted on it refers to an episode of Black Mirror. The blue character, for example, is present in The Waldo Moment –– episode 3 of season 2. The eye, on its left, is linked to episode 2 of season 4, Archangel.
San Junipero is everywhere
In addition to Junipero Dreaming present on Streamberry in episode 1, in Mazey Day, the heroine, Bo, works in a coffee shop called Yorkie – this is the first name of one of the characters of San Junipero (season 3, episode 4). The same episode makes another wink, still through a simple name, when the Quagmire nightclub introduces itself. It is a club also present in San Junipero.
An intriguing newspaper headline
In Joan is awful, a brief image shows us a paper newspaper — supposed to draw our attention mainly to an image of the president of Streamberry. But right next to it, we can read: Beans Going Out Of Style. Literally: grains (chips) have gone out of style. This is an obvious “sequel” to episode 3 of season 1, where “grains” (in VO), chips, allow memories to be relived like a personal YouTube within the brain.
Anyone Who Knows What Love Is, over and over again
In episode 2 of season 1, we could hear the song Anyone Who Knows What Love Is, by Irma Thomas. This piece strangely came back very regularly in black-mirror (White Christmas, Men Against Fire, Crocodile, Rachel, Jack And Ashley Too), and in this season 6, we can hear it in Joan is awful.
Needa sees Metalhead
In the last episode of the season (Demon 79), Needa has visions of the future. Among them, we can see robot dogs… from Metalhead (Metal Heads), an episode of season 4.
The symbol of White Bear (The Hunt)
At several points in season 6, we find the symbol that appeared in the famous episode White Bear (The hunt). First in Beyond the Sea, where cult members draw this logo after their heinous crime. Then in Demon 79on the cursed pendant.
