WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. Foreign Minister Antony Blinken will deliver a speech on Thursday outlining U.S. policy toward China, the U.S. State Department said on Tuesday.
Antony Blinken will speak at 3:00 p.m. GMT at an event hosted by a think tank at George Washington University in Washington, his office said in a statement.
The administration of Democratic President Joe Biden, in office for more than a year, is the subject of criticism from Republicans, in particular, for its lack of formal strategy towards China, the world’s second largest economy. and main strategic rival of the United States.
In February, Washington announced a strategy for the Indo-Pacific region, promising to allocate more diplomatic and security resources there to counter what it sees as Beijing’s attempt to create a regional zone of influence.
The Biden administration has in the past indicated that it is preparing a separate strategy for China, steps that have been delayed in particular by Russia’s offensive in Ukraine.
A source familiar with the matter told Reuters last week that Antony Blinken’s details would not be very detailed. It will mainly be a summary of previous statements made by the US government about China.
