BMW iX1 XDrive30

Original article from June 1, 2022 : BMW is enriching its electric range with the arrival of a brand new model, the iX1 xDrive30, which is none other than the iX1, a trendy version of the X1 also renewed for the occasion.

BMW, like the vast majority of other manufacturers, must expand its electric range. Firstly because this segment is on the rise, with a market share having increased from 6.9% to 11.9% between the start of 2021 and 2022, but not only. Indeed, brands must now deal with other constraints: the tightening of standards, as well as theplanned ban on the sale of thermal carsscheduled for 2035. It is therefore not really surprising that the Bavarian firm is actively working on the development of its electric models, especially since half of its models sold in 2030 will be 100% electric.

A unique compact SUV

In order to expand its trendy range, already well filled with the iX3, iX and i4 among others, BMW today unveils its all-new iX1. You will have understood it, it is about the electric version of the X1 SUV, which offers itself a 3rd generation. A new version which is distinguished aesthetically by some small blue inserts, as well as some more aerodynamic elements, allowing to limit the Cx to only 0.26. To be compared to the Cx of 0.23 of the Model Y, a little better on the exercise.

Longer by 5 centimeters compared to the previous X1, this new BMW iX1, which we could see passing in its camouflage uniform at the end of last year, also changes its interior, taken almost entirely from the Series 2 Active Tourer . The electric SUV then takes up the floating center console between the seats, as well as the double screen, combining a digital handset and a curved touch screen of 10.25 and 10.7 inches respectively. The latter incorporates the latest version of the BMW operating system, called OS 8.

Up to 438 kilometers of range

It is therefore the very first time that the BMW X1 is available in an electric version. This is then available with a single engine, displaying a total output of 313 horsepower (230 kW) and 494 Nm, from its two motors (eDrive 5.0 M170SF), i.e. one on each axle, thus ensuring 4-wheel drive all-wheel drive. This power makes it possible to bring down the 0 to 100 km/h in 5.7 seconds and the vehicle is limited to 180 km/h. The SUV has a 64.7 kWh battery, allowing it to travel up to 438 kilometers according to the WLTP cycle.

It will then be necessary to count 29 minutes to charge this iX1 from 10 to 80% at a maximum power of 130 kW on the DC (direct current) terminals. The on-board charger limits charging to 11 KW on the AC (alternating current) terminals, but a 22 kW version will be offered as an option, which is rare enough to be underlined. Still in terms of recharging, BMW indicates that it has made an effort on the recharging curve – like the BMW i7 – in order to gradually reduce the power delivered at the end of charging in order to increase its speed.

For the trunk, BMW has provided 490 liters of capacity, a capacity that can be increased to 1,495 liters by folding down the rear seats which are independent (40/20/40). The iX1 will have a towing capacity of 1.2 tonnes.

Cyclists and pedestrians are not forgotten

There are many optional driving aids available to enable semi-autonomous driving (level 2 up to 180 km/h), including the ability to detect pedestrians and cyclists when the car is turning right at an intersection. Very good news for urban users since this situation can be dangerous for pedestrians and cyclists due to the car’s blind spot. In terms of technologies, we will also note the presence of a 5G compatible eSIM and a camera allowing you to view, on your smartphone and remotely, what is happening in the cabin. Finally, it is possible to lock and unlock the vehicle’s doors from an iPhone, like what Tesla has been offering for many years now.

A “green” SUV made in Germany

This new BMW iX1 xDrive30 and its hybrid and thermal cousins will all be produced in the German plant in Regensburg and on a single production line for the different versions, a first for the German manufacturer. The battery will also be produced locally.

BMW claims to use ‘green’ energy (particularly solar) for part of the production of vehicles as well as recycled materials, up to 30%. Recycled aluminum even represents 70% of the quantity used in the design of the car. The brand even uses Econyl yarn (from recycled fishing nets) to manufacture the flooring. However, there is still a lot to do, as the press release points out, since a large part of the various production stages are not yet powered by green energy.

Price and availability

Orders for the new electric SUV will open from November, while first deliveries are scheduled for early 2023. If it will take at least 42,750 € for the thermal X1, the prices for the electric version have not yet been communicated by the German firm.
