(Boursier.com) — Spirit AeroSystems soars by more than 15% on Wall Street on rumors of takeover of Boeing. The aeronautical equipment maker, which was separated from the American giant in 2005, has hired bankers to explore various strategic options and has held preliminary discussions with Boeing, according to information from the ‘Wall Street Journal’ and ‘Bloomberg’. Spirit is also exploring the possibility of selling operations in Ireland that make parts for Airbus, according to sources at both news sites.

The supplier, besieged by a series of quality failures, was sold in 2005 to private equity firms, ending nearly 80 years with the aircraft maker. A decision which was part of Boeing’s desire to become simpler and, ultimately, more profitable. Back to the future for Boeing?
